RYA Dinghy Show X Holly Bassett ‘Get Fit For The Season Ahead’ Talk & Warm Up

Get Fit For the Season Ahead!

Please find below the interactive sessions demonstrated/spoken about in my talk at the 2025 RYA Dinghy Show.

Warm Up

Complete each exercise for ~15-20 seconds and repeat this for 5-10 minutes for a quick pre-session warm up.

If you do not have a resistance band you can use a piece of rope, a leash, a SUP paddle, or a jumper in replacement. Although, these are inexpensive pieces of kit so it may be worth investing in an band and keeping in the car for before you hit the water next.

Take Home Points

1: Approach your training like an athlete. Identify the demands of your sport or application – find your why!

2: Ensure your training involves dynamic movement relative to your application. Move in all directions – rotation is your friend! Get strong in multiple planes of motion.

3: Get some support. Coaching is the best way to ensure you move effectively, you can get guidance on form and technique, which can then mitigate the risk of injury. A structured programme that is progressive is what will help you optimise your physical and sporting performance. Check out my services to see if I can help you (online, in-person and bespoke programming).

4: Get strong. Resistance training has a whole host of benefits, including: increased muscle mass and therefore strength and endurance, improved joint function and stability, improved bone density, enhanced ability to perform a daily tasks and sports. Read more benefits here. Specifically for Watersports athletes, we need to be strong in order to improve hiking endurance, effectively pump a foil, pull in a main sheet and maintain the tension and sheet in effectively on a windsurf sail etc.

5: Movement is medicine. Whatever your starting point, investing in yourself and your physical health, is one of the best investments you can make. If you want to maximise your time on the water then a little training to support your sporting application will pay dividends in the long run!

If you wish to consider a more personalised approach to keep you best prepared for your sporting application, I offer in-person Personal Training in Chichester and the surrounding areas (Emsworth, Bosham, Witterings), either at your home or in a Chichester-based gym.

If you are not local to the area then I do offer online PT sessions or bespoke online programming tailored to your goals via an app.
